This was a pretty odd find. I followed the link from Merlin Mann’s daily video project. I am a pretty easy to get along with guy, I think. I have friends with shared interests, we hang out, whatever… but I don’t have a lot of great friends because of several reasons. For one, my interests are pretty diverse. I’m a chemical engineer and I know a lot about my job (process automation, complex control, networking, programming, etc) but I also am super interested in a lot of other things - social media, visual communications, photography, college football, baseball, soccer, history, cartooning, photoshop, philosophy, web design, math, and music, amongst other things. I can usually find people to talk to about work or about football, but that’s about it. It’s hard to meet people that I can talk to about any 3 of the above topics, actually. Not even kidding - when I was in high school everyone took a compatibility test to find prospective friends (kind of weird in retrospect) and my highest-rated result was only 30% compatible. Anyway, back to the link - I was checking out this guy’s website and it’s absolutely uncanny how similar his tastes and interests are. The books he lists, favorite lenses for photography, the mix tapes he’s put together over the years… very weird. The musical arc is especially what got me. That, and the recommended reading of Stranger In a Strange Land. Ok, so it’s not like I’m going to go be friends with the guy, but man is it refreshing to be reminded about the things that you really do enjoy.
